Glass Flakes

High-Performance C-Glass Filler for Corrosion-Resistant Coating and Lining Systems

Overview

Glass Flake, offered by FRP Services & Company Europe, is a precision-engineered additive made from chemically stable C-glass, designed to enhance the barrier properties and service life of protective coatings and linings. Characterized by its ultra-thin, flat particle shape—approximately 5 microns in thickness—and available in a wide particle size range (10–4,000 microns), it delivers measurable improvements in coating performance, especially in corrosive and high-exposure environments.

Engineered for high-spec industrial applications, Glass Flake is integrated into resin systems used to protect steel and concrete assets in the oil & gas, energy, marine, and chemical processing industries.

PROPERTIES

  • C-glass platelet of about 5µm thick and 10~4,000µm wide
  • Extends life of protective coating : dispersed through the coating, prevents the ingress of water vapour and chemical solutions
  • Prevents cracking and peeling : provides a thermal stabilization layer in the protective coating
  • Improves wear resistance : increases hardness of epoxy and polyester resin coatings
  • Improves chemical resistance: Borosilicate C-glass makes good resistance to chemical attacks, compared to other types of glass

Microglas® Glasflake is ideal for use in vinyl ester, epoxy, acrylic paints and acrylic coatings as a barrier against corrosive attacks by chemicals and moisture.

Primary Applications

Glass Flake is primarily used as a functional filler in anti-corrosion coatings and linings where long-term resistance to moisture, chemicals, and mechanical degradation is required. Key application areas include:

Oil Storage Tanks

Internal and external coatings benefit from reduced permeability and enhanced resistance to hydrocarbons, vapors, and condensation, helping prevent under-film corrosion and structural degradation.

Refinery Pipelines and Structural Steelwork

Widely used in systems exposed to thermal variation, chemical vapors, and aggressive process environments. Glass Flake enhances chemical barrier performance and coating longevity on pipelines, vessels, stacks, and exposed structural components.

Offshore Platforms

Used in splash zones, decks, risers, and submerged areas to improve resistance to seawater, wave impact, and UV exposure. Glass Flake contributes to longer maintenance intervals and reduced lifecycle costs.

Offshore Wind Turbines

Applied in protective systems for towers, nacelles, and support structures. Offers resilience to high humidity, salt spray, and temperature cycling in harsh marine climates.

Fire Protection Networks

Pipes and fittings in water-based suppression systems are vulnerable to internal corrosion from stagnant or oxygenated water. Glass Flake improves coating resistance to standing moisture and microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC).

Functional Advantages

Reduced Permeability

Forms a dense, multi-layered structure within the coating, which slows the ingress of water, oxygen, and chemical contaminants.

Enhanced Corrosion Resistance

Extends coating service life by improving resistance to pitting, blistering, and under-film rusting, particularly on steel substrates in immersion or atmospheric conditions.

Chemical Resistance

The C-glass composition offers stability across a wide pH range, making it compatible with acidic, alkaline, and hydrocarbon-rich exposures.

Thermal and Mechanical Durability

Improves coating behavior under thermal cycling, abrasion, and mechanical stress. Helps maintain structural integrity in both ambient and elevated temperature applications.

Versatile Resin Compatibility

Suitable for epoxy, polyester, and vinyl ester systems. Allows for application via brush, roller, airless spray, or trowel depending on formulation.
