Unidirectional Carbon Fabrics

Stuttgart Network Arch Bridge, Germany (2020): The Public City Transport Operator (SSB) of Stuttgart built a network arch bridge of 124-meter span with carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) hangers. The use of CFRP for all hangers allowed a reduction of the cross-sectional area of those to about one quarter of an equivalent steel cross-section.
UD Carbon Fiber for Structural Reinforcement and Advanced Engineering Applications
Unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber is a high-performance composite reinforcement material engineered for applications requiring exceptional tensile strength, directional stiffness, and fatigue resistance. It is widely used in industries such as construction, infrastructure, aerospace, automotive, and renewable energy, where material efficiency, durability, and mechanical reliability are mission-critical.
Construction and Civil Infrastructure Applications
In structural engineering, UD carbon laminates and strips are essential for strengthening, retrofitting, and seismic upgrading of existing concrete and masonry structures. They are bonded to structural elements to improve flexural, shear, and axial capacity without significantly increasing dead load.
Key applications include:
- Bridge strengthening – reinforcement of girders, decks, and piers
- Seismic retrofitting – confinement of columns and shear wall enhancement
- Building renovation – slab and beam reinforcement for new load demands
- Tunnel and utility infrastructure – surface crack control and durability upgrades

UD carbon fiber is favored for its lightweight, non-corrosive, and high-strength properties, making it ideal for projects requiring minimal disruption and long service life. It meets European performance standards, including Eurocode 2 for concrete and Eurocode 8 for seismic design.
- Performance Advantages in Construction
- High tensile modulus in fiber direction
- Long-term chemical and corrosion resistance
- Compatible with epoxy and vinyl ester resin systems
- Fast installation, minimal structural intrusion
- Predictable behavior under static and dynamic loading conditions
Broader Industry Applications
Aerospace: Used in wing spars, fuselage components, and interior structures where weight savings and fatigue performance are essential.
Automotive and EVs: Applied in crash elements, battery enclosures, and lightweight structural frames to increase energy efficiency and safety.
Wind Energy: Integrated into spar caps and load paths of wind turbine blades to enable larger, more efficient rotor designs.
Sports and Marine: Used in bicycles, skis, foils, and hulls requiring customized stiffness and dynamic response.
Compatibility with Advanced Manufacturing
UD carbon reinforcements are suitable for automated processes such as automated fiber placement (AFP), pultrusion, and resin transfer molding (RTM), supporting scalable production of precision structural composites.
